Betty well on her way to recovery.

Betty Boo’s road to recovery!

For those of you who are familiar with our resident dog Betty, you would know that she has recently under gone eye surgery. She has a problem with both eyes and it was said that her vision was going fast. Althia, our Landscaper & owner of the dog did some homework and managed to find a doctor that through surgery could cure her. The Club has a donation box to raise funds to help with the expenses and so far we have raised R1500. I am always so amazed by the generosity of some and we hope to raise the amount even more.

Purchasing of Pre-Paid Rounds

Our financial year runs from the 1st of April to the 31st of March. Clovelly members are given the opportunity to purchase rounds upfront at a discounted rate. I would like to just make all aware that rounds purchased within the financial year need to be used within that time frame. We do not carry rounds forward so please when purchasing Pre-Paid rounds bear this in mind. It is my advice to all that you purchase 10 rounds at a time to better manage rounds played.

What defines a rumour?

Below is what is written in the Heinemann English Dictionary when describing the word rumour.

  • An unconfirmed story or report in circulation: ‘there is a rumour that you are going away’.
  • General gossip: ‘rumour has it you’re leaving’.

There is a rumour circulating that Carl our Caterer is to be leaving. I would just like to make it clear that this is most certainly not the case. The relationship between Clovelly Country Club and Carl’s Catering is very good and there is absolute transparency between both parties.

Clovelly Country Club on the move up!

As most of you would have noticed our Golf Course has been in superb condition. The Golf Digest panel seem to agree and Clovelly Country Club has improved by four places in the golf course rankings. We now sit at 51 in the country. If you look at the list of courses rated around us in the article, it is most certainly something to be proud of. Even better news is that for conditioning we rate the 6th best in the Western Cape. This is a huge achievement because all the courses listed above us are estate courses. Our course staff sits at around 15 & in comparison to other local clubs, we arearound 10 – 15 staff shy on average. To further compare the budgets of those courses together with their machine numbers on course we have done exceptionally well. I would like to extend a big congratulation’s to Steven Webber who in my honest opinion is one of the best Course Managers in the country.

The future in Good Hands

Three of our juniors have decided to make a career out of golf. The reports that I am receiving from the Dale Hayes Golf School of Excellence are good. Lee Odendaal, Tumi Motale and T.J Biggs are all working hard to achieve good results over there. The Dale Hayes Golf School of Excellence offers quality coaching programmes and is run from Zwartkop Country Club. We wish them well and look forward to catching up with them soon.

Smiling all the way from Wellington!

Well done Lauren for making the WP ‘C’ Division Team. Keep up the good work.

What a week it has been for June Harrison and Bridget Woodhouse. In my opinion these two thunder cats paired up is one formidable force. There is always much speculation of June Harrison and her handicap – but let’s face it -she does not hit the longest ball,, she just loves to compete and has a killer short game. She is competitive and likes to win. The same can be said of Bridget Woodhouse who has many trophies on the dining room mantle. They played beautifully well together this week Tuesday to win the Roghill Trophy. This is a tough one to win with the format being Medal Foursomes. This was not enough to satisfy their hunger to win as the two drove out to Wellington to play in the Wellington Ladies Open. They returned from there winners yet again, but this time with a dozen eggs and some meat straight off a neighbouring farm. Well done girls, you make us proud, keep that Clovelly flag flying high! Tree planting phase 0ne is here!

Think green and let’s keep the world clean.

It is with great pleasure that I announce that phase one of our five phase tree planting projects is to commence next month. In order to progress from phase to phase we need R30 000 per phase. We will be taking the course and geographically breaking it down into sections of importance. As many of you have seen our blue gums are slowly weathering away and cracking from old age and years of abuse inflicted on them by the notorious South Easter winds. Make a difference by donating money to our Tree Fund and leave a lasting legacy. I would like to thank all those members who have already dug so deeply into their pockets to donate to this fantastic cause. Clovelly behind a good cause This week was the start of our Corporate and Charity Golf days. The greens have bounced back superbly well after the Hollow Tyning process. We are proud of what we have to offer and look forward to sharing our course for a good cause. Last year Clovelly played a part in raising thousands of rands through Charity Golf Days and this is something we are very proud of and will continue to do. We also like to give back to Western Province Golf by hosting some of their fixtures. One in particular is the Western Province Nomads Society. We love having them here because they are just so easy to host. Kevin Pappern the Nomads Captain could not stop raving about the course and how he and his boys just love coming here year in and year out. We also had Riaan Myburgh of Golf BizNiz here on Thursday and I was amazed to see how many of our members were in his group.

Kevin Pappern the Nomads Captain.

The future in your hands Moving forward we would like to see more happening in and around the Club in respect to functions and fun events. We on the Management Team would like to give you the members the opportunity to write to us or email us on clubhouse@clovelly.co.za with some of your ideas on what you would like to see happening here to get your support. We know the drinking laws are a concern but it is very easy for us to arrange transport so don’t let that concern you. On that note out Club Draw now sits at an exciting R6 000, a weekend for two sounds good – what do you say? I say show up on Friday nights and who knows it may just be you.

We are the champions!
The world Q Scramble Final was held recently at Fancourt Golf Resort , played over 36 holes. A Clovelly team represented by Ron Dunn, Steven Dunn, Dave Liebrecht and John Spyker won by one shot from a Swedish team, the winning score was 32 under par.Playing on the Montagu and the very difficult Links Golf course this was a fine achievement, so well done to the Clovelly boys and we wish them all of the best for next years final.Well done Team Spyker—that very quickly became Team ‘Quality’ after Ron’s favourite saying. Steven was the foundation of the side with his booming drives that always seemed to land on the fairway, John and Ron never quite so long but short and steady. What a combination how could they lose! We are the Champions and we’d like to thank Mr Raymond Ackerman of Pick n Pay for his generous sponsorship.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The Silver Membership green fee has been reduced to R220 and if you buy ‘10 round packages’ they will cost you R200 per round which totals R2 000.

EASTER WEEKEND WET WET WET. That’s what our Easter weekend was all about, rain and then more rain so the numbers on the course you could count on two hands. Club Championships an absolute blast!!

John Spyker with Chris Bruchhausen winning the Maurice Raphael Trophy.

This year’s Club Championships were well supported with 132 players competing in their divisions. The first weekend presented the player’s with some challenging conditions with strong winds, tucked pins and greens like glass.

John Spyker with Ebrahim Ganief, the Pin Cup.

The golf course was presented to the players in pristine condition. The greens were engineered by Steven Webber and his team to tournament spec. It was said by many a golfer that the greens were the best they have been in years and I can agree. Not only the greens but the course was just superb all round.

John Spyker with James Wight , the Veterans Cup winner.

After the first round it was Chris Bruchhausen who came out focused carding a 70 gross and leading by one over Willie Mentoor and Jonathan Bernard in the ‘A’ Division.

In the ‘B’ Division Gerald Van Heerden was on fire shooting an 81 gross and could have easily gone lower he said. It was no surprise that he was the leader in the ‘B’ Division after the first round. Michael Baines was 2 shots back and Jan Badenhorst and Peter Miles just 3 shots back.

In the ‘C’ Division it was a new member Ebrahim Ganief who played beautiful golf opening with a 90 gross 3 shots ahead of division favourite Paul Barrett and RAGA star Apolis Siyabulela was just 6 behind but looking good.

Yaaseen Manuel the Prentice Cup winner.

The second round conditions were even tougher with the wind stronger and the course set up longer. Chris and Willie kept their cool and played the course as it was presented – both carded a 75 as did David Mampies and Josh De Klerk.

The star of the day in the ‘A’ Division was Steven Dunn who revelled under the challenging conditions to score a level par round 10 shots better than his first round.

There was plenty of hustle and bustle and in the ‘B’ Division with Brent Kleve moving up the ladder scoring 81 and Shane De Kock, one of the RAGA students, carding the best round of the day scoring 8 over par in that wind. Wow that’s all I can say!

President Raymond Ackerman with Chris Bruchhausen, ‘A’ Division winner.

In the ‘C’ Division Apolis Siyabulela shot lights out making us all very proud when he came to the scoring table with an 83 gross, 13 shots better than round 1. Ebrahim was also hot and showing no signs of cracking carding an 85. Paul Barrett played his usual down the middle golf scoring 91 and keeping a close eye on the leader.

It’s the fourth and final round, the tension is in the air and the nerves are visible. It’s all to play for and nothing to lose. With the trophies on display on the 10th tee the players knew what was up for grabs.

In the ‘A’ Division it was Chris ahead by 5 and looking fit to go all the way. Jon Bernard was there and Willie Mentoor always a contender able to go low on the day.

Apolis Siyabulela This years ‘C’ Division winner.

The ‘B’ Division could have gone any way with Jan Badenhorst and Michael Baines fighting all the way with Mark Warrington giving it his all. Badenhorst birdied both 16 and 17 to pull within one shot. They halved the 18th for Michael Baines to win by one.

In the ‘C’ Division Ebrahim Ganief could not stay with Apolis Siyabulela who just kept delivering and the every steady Paul Barrett. In the end it was Apolis Siyabulela who took home the trophy with Paul Barrett winning the nett.

Well done all to a very successful championship and we hope to see you all again and back for more next year.

John Spyker and Michael Baines, the ‘B’ Division winner.

Peter Miles, winning the 72 Hole Nett Veterans Cup.

Brilliant, brilliant performance by our Boys in Blue

Our Boy’s in Blue representing this years winning Challenge League.

History has been repeated by our Challenge League Team. It has been 20 years since the Clovelly Country Club Challenge Team last won the League. It was a flawless season with 6 games won out of 6 games played. To top off the successful season and to finish in true style our Boys in Blue beat both Metropolitan and Somerset West Golf Club’s 8 games to 0, really confirming a great league season. To celebrate this achievement we will be having a fun game playing the away side against the home side on Saturday the 10th March.

Abe Van Rooyen showing all that he still has got it winning the A Division.

Duncan Johansen was the runner up in the A Division.

Q Scramble back in town, fun and laughter plus great first prize!!
For those of you that have not yet played in the annual Q Scramble event it’s time you did. The format is Scramble until the ball is in the hole. No restrictions on best shots and one can even stand directly behind their partner on putts. As a member you pay R190 competition fee plus your green fee. The winning team on the day will receive a first class experience to play at Fancourt in the Q Scramble World Final.Important notice related to Bar purchasesAs from the 1st of April the 20 % discount on bar purchases will fall away. This is by no means the end of the world and I will explain to you why. The actual selling price currently has been altered slightly so that when the 20 % discount is applied we are fairly close to the price we would have sold that product for had there not been any discount given. So by the 1st April all bar prices will be altered to reflect what one would have received previously after receiving the 20 % discount.

Dhiren Garach dominated the B Division with a 65 nett.

Greg Fine had a hole in one on the 6th hole. Well done Greg!!

It is almost time to say a sad good bye to a True Legend! As is true to life nothing can last forever. Jeremy Lindquist has made Clovelly what it is today and really helped put our club on the map. Jeremy has been committed to the heritage and history attached to this very special club for over 18 years. He has worn the badge on his sleeve and in many circles is known as Mr. Clovelly. It is to be announced that as from the 1st April John Spyker will be introduced to the Clovelly Staff. He will be working together with Jeremy till the end of August. Then from 1st September he will be on his own as the Club Manager relieving Jeremy of his duties. We will most certainly miss Jeremy and to many of us we cannot imagine Clovelly without the legendary Mr Sparkling!.

Warrington clinches 27th Ladies Club Championship Title:

This year’s Ladies Club Championships was a very special time. It was played over two rounds over a weekend. This turned out to be an absolute blast with the majority of the ladies saying how wonderful it felt to be made to feel so special and part of the club. The first round was Saturday morning and what a day it was with hardly any wind and clear skies. The nervous energy that surrounds the Club Championships was evident. Mel Charlwood was very rushed – almost missing her tee time. She made it here in record time burning rubber in her Toyota Conquest, car keys thrown to the starter to park the abandoned car in the lot. She made it and despite all that actually played rather well.In our silver division the rusty swings of Emelia Coetzer and Wendy Warrington only managed 9 over par rounds. Our star performer was Lauren Sobotker who up till the Club Championships had been playing beautiful golf. She was disappointed with her 85 Gross but remained positive for Sunday. Our surprise star after round one was Katia Shaff who just kept her cool and played the course. She was our Clubhouse leader carding an 80 gross. Kelly Muzzell also played exceptionally well on the first day carding an 82 gross. It was a momentous occasion for The Raymond Ackerman Academy students playing in this year’s Champs. They have put in the time and have been well prepared for this event. Pete Jones has made sure that those playing were ready. As is often the case playing in your first Club Championships, nerves take their toll on even the most grooved swing. This was the case for Lungi Mangesi who found the first round very tough and wanted to pull out. After support from Pete Jones and Carel Coetzer she persisted. We were so proud of Lungi who improved by 21 shots on day 2 and made as all so happy and some even tearful. Another star from R.A.G.A was the bubbly Menasha Meyer who won this year’s Junior Cup in style, waving those locks from fairway to green. Kelly Wolfaardt was also a Champion taking home the Copper Cup.The second day provided a leader board that was open to many options for this year’s Club Champion. It was experience verses young and upcoming talent. Lauren Sobotker wanted the title of Champion attached to her name, Emelia wanted to make it two in a row but Wendy was not going to make it easy. Katia had an outside chance but playing in the final group on Sunday was nerve wracking stuff! After the first nine Wendy was three over, Emelia five and Katia six. Lauren on the other hand was just one over, ramming in a superb downhill birdie putt on the ninth. For a brief moment after Lauren then birdied the tenth hole it looked tight. However Wendy was solid all the way home leaving no room for Lauren to squeeze that title this year. Well played Wendy, you have amazed us all again by show casing your golfing talent.
