Betty Boo’s road to recovery!
For those of you who are familiar with our resident dog Betty, you would know that she has recently under gone eye surgery. She has a problem with both eyes and it was said that her vision was going fast. Althia, our Landscaper & owner of the dog did some homework and managed to find a doctor that through surgery could cure her. The Club has a donation box to raise funds to help with the expenses and so far we have raised R1500. I am always so amazed by the generosity of some and we hope to raise the amount even more.
Purchasing of Pre-Paid Rounds
Our financial year runs from the 1st of April to the 31st of March. Clovelly members are given the opportunity to purchase rounds upfront at a discounted rate. I would like to just make all aware that rounds purchased within the financial year need to be used within that time frame. We do not carry rounds forward so please when purchasing Pre-Paid rounds bear this in mind. It is my advice to all that you purchase 10 rounds at a time to better manage rounds played.
What defines a rumour?
Below is what is written in the Heinemann English Dictionary when describing the word rumour.
- An unconfirmed story or report in circulation: ‘there is a rumour that you are going away’.
- General gossip: ‘rumour has it you’re leaving’.
There is a rumour circulating that Carl our Caterer is to be leaving. I would just like to make it clear that this is most certainly not the case. The relationship between Clovelly Country Club and Carl’s Catering is very good and there is absolute transparency between both parties.
Clovelly Country Club on the move up!
As most of you would have noticed our Golf Course has been in superb condition. The Golf Digest panel seem to agree and Clovelly Country Club has improved by four places in the golf course rankings. We now sit at 51 in the country. If you look at the list of courses rated around us in the article, it is most certainly something to be proud of. Even better news is that for conditioning we rate the 6th best in the Western Cape. This is a huge achievement because all the courses listed above us are estate courses. Our course staff sits at around 15 & in comparison to other local clubs, we arearound 10 – 15 staff shy on average. To further compare the budgets of those courses together with their machine numbers on course we have done exceptionally well. I would like to extend a big congratulation’s to Steven Webber who in my honest opinion is one of the best Course Managers in the country.
The future in Good Hands
Three of our juniors have decided to make a career out of golf. The reports that I am receiving from the Dale Hayes Golf School of Excellence are good. Lee Odendaal, Tumi Motale and T.J Biggs are all working hard to achieve good results over there. The Dale Hayes Golf School of Excellence offers quality coaching programmes and is run from Zwartkop Country Club. We wish them well and look forward to catching up with them soon.

The world Q Scramble Final was held recently at Fancourt Golf Resort , played over 36 holes. A Clovelly team represented by Ron Dunn, Steven Dunn, Dave Liebrecht and John Spyker won by one shot from a Swedish team, the winning score was 32 under par.Playing on the Montagu and the very difficult Links Golf course this was a fine achievement, so well done to the Clovelly boys and we wish them all of the best for next years final.Well done Team Spyker—that very quickly became Team ‘Quality’ after Ron’s favourite saying. Steven was the foundation of the side with his booming drives that always seemed to land on the fairway, John and Ron never quite so long but short and steady. What a combination how could they lose!
We are the Champions and we’d like to thank Mr Raymond Ackerman of Pick n Pay for his generous sponsorship.EARLYBIRD SPECIAL If you tee off between 0700hrs and 0800hrs your green fee will be R150, available weekdays only. (No Public Holidays)
LATE GOLF Members late 9 hole golf green fee rate NOW R70 7 days a week.
EASTER WEEKEND WET WET WET. That’s what our Easter weekend was all about, rain and then more rain so the numbers on the course you could count on two hands. Never worry we needed the rain after the hollow tyning and over seeding of the greens. From all of us at Clovelly we hope you all had a very Happy Easter.

Club Championships an absolute blast!!
This year’s Club Championships were well supported with 132 players competing in their divisions. The first weekend presented the player’s with some challenging conditions with strong winds, tucked pins and greens like glass.
The golf course was presented to the players in pristine condition. The greens were engineered by Steven Webber and his team to tournament spec. It was said by many a golfer that the greens were the best they have been in years and I can agree. Not only the greens but the course was just superb all round.
After the first round it was Chris Bruchhausen who came out focused carding a 70 gross and leading by one over Willie Mentoor and Jonathan Bernard in the ‘A’ Division.
In the ‘B’ Division Gerald Van Heerden was on fire shooting an 81 gross and could have easily gone lower he said. It was no surprise that he was the leader in the ‘B’ Division after the first round. Michael Baines was 2 shots back and Jan Badenhorst and Peter Miles just 3 shots back.
In the ‘C’ Division it was a new member Ebrahim Ganief who played beautiful golf opening with a 90 gross 3 shots ahead of division favourite Paul Barrett and RAGA star Apolis Siyabulela was just 6 behind but looking good.
The second round conditions were even tougher with the wind stronger and the course set up longer. Chris and Willie kept their cool and played the course as it was presented – both carded a 75 as did David Mampies and Josh De Klerk.
The star of the day in the ‘A’ Division was Steven Dunn who revelled under the challenging conditions to score a level par round 10 shots better than his first round.
There was plenty of hustle and bustle and in the ‘B’ Division with Brent Kleve moving up the ladder scoring 81 and Shane De Kock, one of the RAGA students, carding the best round of the day scoring 8 over par in that wind. Wow that’s all I can say!
In the ‘C’ Division Apolis Siyabulela shot lights out making us all very proud when he came to the scoring table with an 83 gross, 13 shots better than round 1. Ebrahim was also hot and showing no signs of cracking carding an 85. Paul Barrett played his usual down the middle golf scoring 91 and keeping a close eye on the leader.
It’s the fourth and final round, the tension is in the air and the nerves are visible. It’s all to play for and nothing to lose. With the trophies on display on the 10th tee the players knew what was up for grabs.
In the ‘A’ Division it was Chris ahead by 5 and looking fit to go all the way. Jon Bernard was there and Willie Mentoor always a contender able to go low on the day.
The ‘B’ Division could have gone any way with Jan Badenhorst and Michael Baines fighting all the way with Mark Warrington giving it his all. Badenhorst birdied both 16 and 17 to pull within one shot. They halved the 18th for Michael Baines to win by one.
In the ‘C’ Division Ebrahim Ganief could not stay with Apolis Siyabulela who just kept delivering and the every steady Paul Barrett. In the end it was Apolis Siyabulela who took home the trophy with Paul Barrett winning the nett.
Well done all to a very successful championship and we hope to see you all again and back for more next year.

Warrington clinches 27th Ladies Club Championship Title:

This year’s Ladies Club Championships was a very special time. It was played over two rounds over a weekend. This turned out to be an absolute blast with the majority of the ladies saying how wonderful it felt to be made to feel so special and part of the club. The first round was Saturday morning and what a day it was with hardly any wind and clear skies. The nervous energy that surrounds the Club Championships was evident. Mel Charlwood was very rushed – almost missing her tee time. She made it here in record time burning rubber in her Toyota Conquest, car keys thrown to the starter to park the abandoned car in the lot. She made it and despite all that actually played rather well.In our silver division the rusty swings of Emelia Coetzer and Wendy Warrington only managed 9 over par rounds. Our star performer was Lauren Sobotker who up till the Club Championships had been playing beautiful golf. She was disappointed with her 85 Gross but remained positive for Sunday. Our surprise star after round one was Katia Shaff who just kept her cool and played the course. She was our Clubhouse leader carding an 80 gross. Kelly Muzzell also played exceptionally well on the first day carding an 82 gross. It was a momentous occasion for The Raymond Ackerman Academy students playing in this year’s Champs. They have put in the time and have been well prepared for this event. Pete Jones has made sure that those playing were ready. As is often the case playing in your first Club Championships, nerves take their toll on even the most grooved swing. This was the case for Lungi Mangesi who found the first round very tough and wanted to pull out. After support from Pete Jones and Carel Coetzer she persisted. We were so proud of Lungi who improved by 21 shots on day 2 and made as all so happy and some even tearful. Another star from R.A.G.A was the bubbly Menasha Meyer who won this year’s Junior Cup in style, waving those locks from fairway to green. Kelly Wolfaardt was also a Champion taking home the Copper Cup.The second day provided a leader board that was open to many options for this year’s Club Champion. It was experience verses young and upcoming talent. Lauren Sobotker wanted the title of Champion attached to her name, Emelia wanted to make it two in a row but Wendy was not going to make it easy. Katia had an outside chance but playing in the final group on Sunday was nerve wracking stuff! After the first nine Wendy was three over, Emelia five and Katia six. Lauren on the other hand was just one over, ramming in a superb downhill birdie putt on the ninth. For a brief moment after Lauren then birdied the tenth hole it looked tight. However Wendy was solid all the way home leaving no room for Lauren to squeeze that title this year. Well played Wendy, you have amazed us all again by show casing your golfing talent.
